Egyptians Oppose Israel’s Proposal for a ‘Humanitarian City’ in Southern Gaza

Egypt strongly opposes Israel’s proposal to create a “humanitarian city” in Rafah, fearing it could lead to a mass influx of Palestinians into Egypt and destabilize the region.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty conveyed this stance during a call with US Envoy Steven Witkoff, rejecting the plan to house about 600,000 displaced Palestinians in a gated camp indefinitely.

Public opinion in Egypt reflects this opposition, with citizens asserting that Palestinians will not abandon their land.

The Arab League also criticized the plan, suggesting it represents an “ethnic cleansing strategy.” Egypt is concerned that the initiative could increase Israel’s military presence near its border and violate the 1979 peace treaty.

Within Israel, there are divided opinions, with concerns that the plan could strain the country’s finances and possibly exacerbate antisemitism.
