Gambia Confirms the TRRC Status Report, Marking a Significant Step Toward Justice and Reconciliation

On July 17, 2025, stakeholders reviewed the Third Status Report on The Gambia’s TRRC recommendations at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre, led by the NHRC, focusing on progress, accountability, and challenges in achieving justice and reparations for victims of past human rights abuses.

TRRC-Third-Status-Report

On July 17, 2025, stakeholders gathered at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre to review the Third Status Report on the government’s implementation of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) recommendations.

Led by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the meeting assessed progress from May 2024 to May 2025 and aimed to involve various groups in monitoring the government’s commitment.

NHRC Chairperson Emmanuel D. Joof emphasized the importance of collective accountability for national healing and the need for collaboration in reporting on TRRC recommendations.

Juldeh Ceesay from the Ministry of Finance assured a commitment to funding the TRRC process. At the same time, Ida Persson from the Ministry of Justice highlighted achievements, such as the establishment of a Special Prosecutor’s Office and a special tribunal but acknowledged challenges in providing reparations for victims.

Hon. Fatoumatta Njai from the National Assembly called for continued assessment of progress and accountability, praising the NHRC’s efforts and honoring victims of state abuses.

She emphasized that the report reflects the challenges and work that still need to be done in the pursuit of justice.
