Janneh-Commission-Testimony

Surahata Janneh, former chairperson of the Janneh Commission, testified on July 14 before the National Assembly Select Committee regarding the sale and disposal of assets belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh.

He asserted that the Commission operated independently, without political interference. Janneh emphasized the Commission’s core principles of impartiality, honesty, transparency, and accountability.

He explained the Commission’s financial management, noting that commissioners were paid through the Attorney General’s Office and other ministries. Janneh highlighted the recruitment process, stating that the lead counsel oversaw investigators who worked independently of each other.

The Ministry of Justice prepared the Commission’s budget, which covered a three-month period. Janneh mentioned that the final report was 1,600 pages, entirely drafted by the commissioners.

He noted that several luxury vehicles were found unused at the State House and that the investigation included shareholdings in major companies.

Janneh confirmed that he and the commissioners maintained their independence and rejected any orders from the Cabinet, stating he would have resigned if pressured.
