The National Assembly of The Gambia rejected the 2024 Draft Constitution during its second reading, preventing it from moving forward. Presented by Attorney General Dawda A. Jallow, the bill aimed to replace the 1997 Constitution and modernize the governance system.

However, it faced strong opposition, with lawmakers citing insufficient public consultation and a lack of alignment with the needs of the Gambian people.

The final vote was 35 in favor, 21 against, and one abstention, falling short of the required two-thirds majority. Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta announced the bill’s failure, highlighting ongoing divisions over constitutional reform in the country.
