Mali’s transitional parliament has approved a bill that allows Gen. Assimi Goita to hold the presidency without being subject to an election.

This mandate can be renewed indefinitely, meaning he could remain in power until at least 2030. The bill received unanimous support from the 131 members who were present.

Goita became president after a military coup in August 2020 that removed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

This decision comes despite ongoing pressure from regional and international groups for elections and a return to civilian rule.
