Minister Ebrima Sillah Outlines the Ministry of Works’ Responsibilities in the Bissau Embassy Project

Ebrima Sillah, the Minister of Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, stated that his ministry was not involved in awarding the contract or selecting the consultant for The Gambia’s embassy project in Bissau.

Their involvement began only after the National Assembly requested an assessment of the building. During the review, they found no official documents confirming land ownership and recommended establishing ownership before construction.

The minister noted a lack of evidence for proper procurement procedures and due diligence regarding the contractor. He concluded that the embassy building is beyond repair and recommended demolishing it in favor of new construction.

The minister also highlighted the difficulties in holding the contractor or consultant accountable due to the project’s age and indicated that details about those involved fall under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
