Togo’s President Faure GnassingbĂ© is facing more pressure due to a government crackdown on protests calling for his resignation.

These protests arose over recent constitutional changes that could allow him to stay in power indefinitely. Activists criticized the arrest and harsh treatment of many protesters in Lomé, with at least 25 still in jail.

Opposition politicians described the changes as a “constitutional coup.” The group “Hands Off My Constitution” is advocating an end to GnassingbĂ©’s long-standing rule. Protests have been rare since the 2022 ban after a violent incident.

The public prosecutor defended the arrests, claiming the protests challenged the Republic’s institutions.
