EU and African Union Ministers Commit to Enhancing Cooperation in Peace, Security, and Economic Matters

Foreign ministers from the European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) convened in Brussels on Wednesday, May 21, to enhance peace, security, and economic partnership cooperation.

They underscored the necessity of implementing commitments made during prior summits. Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to multilateralism and adherence to international law.

The meeting underscored the EU’s position as Africa’s closest partner in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges, particularly regarding Russia’s growing influence on the continent.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas introduced a new Special Representative for the Sahel region and emphasized the importance of incorporating input from African nations on local priorities and strategies.

Discussions also focused on ongoing crises in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the EU pledging over €1 billion in support for African partners.

This meeting marked a significant milestone as the EU and AU commemorate their 25th anniversary. It showcased collaboration in critical areas such as raw materials, artificial intelligence, and migration.
