Thousands of undocumented migrants believed to be from Rwanda were expelled from Goma by the M23 rebel group over the weekend.

M23 spokesperson Willy Ngoma presented 181 individuals claiming Rwandan nationality, along with their families, while burning their Congolese documents, which they deemed fraudulent.

The families primarily originated from the Karenga region, previously controlled by the FDLR, which both the M23 and regional leaders accuse the Congolese government of supporting.

Many of these families lived in a displacement camp in Sake, and around 360 individuals were repatriated to Rwanda. The eastern Congo has faced ongoing violence involving armed groups like the M23, which is reportedly supported by approximately 4,000 Rwandan troops.
