Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on the Barrow government to expedite the processes of reparations and justice for victims of former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh and his regime, emphasizing the need for national healing from the deep scars inflicted on the country.
Darboe made this appeal during a justice march held in remembrance of Ebrima Solo Sandeng, who tragically died while in state custody in 2016 after leading a peaceful protest advocating for electoral reform. Sandeng was a prominent member of the UDP.
Every year on April 14, many campaigners, predominantly UDP members and supporters, gathered in the streets to commemorate the late Solo Sandeng and other fallen heroes.
Addressing the gathered crowd, Darboe remarked, ” As we march today in solidarity and reflect on the sacrifices made by Solo Sandeng and other brave patriots, we urge the government of The Gambia to promptly implement the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC). The victims of the Jammeh regime, along with their families, deserve reparations and closure.” He cautioned that any delay in delivering justice and reparations would only extend the suffering of the victims and hinder national healing.
Darboe reaffirmed the UDP’s unwavering support for all victims of the Jammeh era, stressing the party’s commitment to ensuring their suffering is recognized and addressed.
Additionally, he urged the government to accelerate reparations for victims and their families as outlined in the TRRC report, prosecute all responsible perpetrators and establish memorials and educational initiatives to honor the memory of those who fought and sacrificed for democracy.
