Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party, has called on The Gambia’s Inspector General of Police to arrest Baboucarr Bahoum. Bahoum insulted the people of Kiang by labeling them ‘ungrateful’ for voting for a UDP candidate in last month’s election.
After public backlash against his remarks, Bahoum was reportedly summoned by the police for questioning and later issued an apology. However, Darboe rejected Bahoum’s apology, describing his comments as “seditious,” “outrageous,” and unacceptable. He insisted that Bahoum be held accountable for his statements against the people of Kiang.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Darboe urged the Inspector General of Police to arrest Bahoum, interrogate him thoroughly, and assess whether his statements could incite disaffection or discontent among the people of Kiang. Darboe emphasized that Bahoum should not evade punishment simply by offering an apology, stating, “He cannot hide behind an apology and go unpunished after committing a crime.”
Darboe also cautioned the Inspector General to be mindful of his decisions in his official capacity, particularly those that seem politically motivated. He concluded by advising the Inspector General to exercise caution.ure.”
