A devastating fire in Bakoteh on Friday destroyed four two-bedroom units and a parlor, resulting in injuries and significant financial losses estimated at D107,000. This tragedy has prompted urgent calls for community support for the affected tenants.

As residents cope with the blaze’s aftermath, which consumed four units, including two bedrooms and a parlor, the tenants are left to navigate the destruction.

Muhammed Wange, one of the tenants who lost D80,000 in savings, shared the distressing moment he learned about the fire while he was away. “I received a call around 1 PM informing me that my home was on fire,” Wange explained, noting that the blaze originated in the landlord’s apartment due to an electrical issue and quickly spread, fueled by a burning gas bottle.

Fatou Cham, another tenant, experienced a similar loss when she hurried home to discover that her belongings had been destroyed, including the D27,000 she had saved for a bank deposit. “I am reaching out for support and assistance during this challenging time,” she emphasized, underscoring the urgent need for help.

Mariama Badjie, a neighbor, recalled the chaos of the moment she noticed the flames while cooking. “The fire was intense, and the smoke enveloped the area, making it difficult to breathe,” she recounted, commending the bravery of local youths who attempted to control the blaze before the fire service arrived.

As the community rallies to support those affected, the calls for donations and assistance grow louder—many hope to help the tenants rebuild their lives after this heartbreaking loss.
