Abdoulie Fatty, a prominent Gambian human rights attorney, has asserted that former president Yahya Jammeh will not escape justice for the crimes he allegedly committed during his 22-year reign of terror over the West African nation.
The esteemed lawyer’s remarks came just a week after Jammeh expressed his intention to return to the country, dismissing plans for his prosecution as ‘nonsense.’
However, his statements have faced widespread condemnation from Gambians, who are urging the expedited establishment of an ECOWAS hybrid court to hold Jammeh and his accomplices accountable for crimes against humanity.
“As someone well-versed in the discussions surrounding the formation of the Hybrid Court for the ultimate prosecution of Jammeh and his associates, I can firmly state that he is fully aware he cannot evade justice if he returns to Gambia; the government will not be able to protect him in any capacity,” Lawyer Fatty stated on X.
