The government has rescinded its approval for the Diaspora Club’s $7.2 million maternity ward project in Chamen mere months after initially granting it. This decision has disheartened club executives and expectant mothers in the area. Founded by Gambians living abroad, the Diaspora Club aims to support marginalized groups, particularly in healthcare.
In July 2024, the Ministry of Health approved the construction of the maternity block at the Chamen Health Centre but subsequently issued a letter revoking that approval. This reversal was due to a secured grant from the African Development Bank for renovations at the health center. This decision ignited discontent among residents, with some alleging that political motivations influenced the revocation.
Diaspora Club President Jorjoh Mbye voiced her disappointment, highlighting the community’s pressing need for the ward and the club’s commitment to the project in Chamen. She noted that they are open to negotiations but insist on pursuing the implementation of the project in its intended location, even considering legal action if necessary. The Standard attempted to reach the Ministry for clarification but did not receive a response.
