Gambia and Senegal Navies Completed a Joint Patrol to Combat Illegal Fishing

The Gambia and Senegal navies conducted a 10-hour joint patrol on December 28, 2024, within The Gambia’s EEZ, inspecting five vessels and arresting two for violations, as part of ongoing collaboration to enhance maritime security, combat illegal fishing, and protect marine resources.

The Gambia Navy and the Senegal Navy have successfully conducted a joint patrol within The Gambia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), reinforcing their commitment to enhancing maritime security and safeguarding marine resources. 

The operation lasted approximately 10 hours on December 28, 2024, and involved two naval vessels: the GNS Fankanta from the Gambia Navy and the Lac Retba from the Senegal Navy. During the patrol, five fishing vessels were inspected for compliance, resulting in the arrest of two vessels: Abo Islam (Egyptian-owned and Gambian-flagged) and Fayako (Senegalese) for violating maritime regulations. 

This joint operation is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Gambia Armed Forces and the Senegal Armed Forces through the Joint Military Committee, focused on addressing illegal fishing practices and ensuring the sustainable management of the region’s marine resources.

“The operation underscores the strong partnership between the two nations’ navies, exemplifying professionalism and a shared commitment to maintaining peace and security in their maritime territories.” 

Both countries reaffirm their dedication to combating illegal activities at sea and protecting their precious marine environments, as The Gambia Armed Forces stated. 

The Gambia Navy expressed gratitude for the Senegal Navy’s cooperation throughout the operation and looks forward to continued bilateral collaboration to tackle future maritime
