The Gambia Police Force’s Cybercrime and Digital Forensic Unit has apprehended a Nigerian national involved in an online fraud scheme that involved impersonation and job scams.
The suspect established a fraudulent Facebook profile, posing as a Senior Commissioner of Customs, and advertised fictitious job opportunities, charging potential victims an application fee of D8,000 through a mobile money account. The scheme came to light after a victim reported the incident, leading to the suspect’s arrest. Authorities have confiscated mobile phones and digital devices connected to the fraud for further investigation.
The police have warned the public about the dangers of online scams and encouraged victims to come forward with reports. They emphasized the importance of verifying the authenticity of accounts. This incident underscores the growing challenge of cybercrime in The Gambia.
