The Gambia’s parliament has approved a groundbreaking agreement that will enable Gambians to pursue legal employment opportunities in Spain for four years. This innovative program, known as “circular migration,” seeks to generate domestic and international job prospects and address the country’s escalating unemployment rates.
Trade Minister Baboucarr Joof introduced the agreement at the parliamentary session, underscoring its significance for Gambians. He characterized it as unprecedented, aligning with the government’s objective to diminish unemployment through legitimate channels. Joof emphasized that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) offers a lawful avenue for Gambians interested in seasonal employment in Spain, a favored destination for many individuals seeking improved prospects in Europe. He drew attention to the perils associated with irregular migration, highlighting the dangers faced by many Gambians embarking on hazardous journeys to Europe in pursuit of better opportunities. This agreement presents a safer and legal alternative to such risky endeavours.
Joof emphasized that this initiative would address the issue of irregular migration and its associated risks, emphasizing the potential benefits for the youth of The Gambia, who represent the nation’s future. He assured lawmakers that the agreement would not impose any financial burden on The Gambia, as the Spanish authorities have committed to fully funding the recruitment process. This commitment from the Spanish authorities ensures that The Gambia can benefit from the agreement without experiencing any financial strain. The successful implementation of this MOU is anticipated to significantly contribute to the government’s national employment policy, which aims to create 150,000 jobs.
