The Spanish Interior Minister has requested that the European border agency Frontex seek permission from African nations to patrol their waters to curb irregular migration to the Canary Islands.

The minister emphasized the need for Frontex to operate outside of Europe to manage irregular migration effectively. The Canary Islands have experienced a significant increase in irregular migration, leading to tensions between regional and central authorities over the care of underage migrants.

The Spanish Prime Minister also defended migration to support the country’s aging population and economy, emphasizing that illegal migration represents only a tiny portion of arrivals.
