Seedy Njie, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly, has called for increased representation of African and Middle Eastern countries in decision-making at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
During the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva, Njie criticized the UN’s failure to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He emphasized the need to confront “grave injustices” in Palestine, stating the ongoing carnage against the Palestinian people is not just a political issue but a profound human rights crisis. He highlighted the devastating impact of continuous bombings, forced displacements, and the destruction of homes and medical facilities, which have resulted in the deaths of thousands, including many innocent women and children.
Njie urged the UNSC to move beyond political considerations and adhere to the foundational values of the United Nations, calling for immediate action.
Njie called for a unified international resolution recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state in alignment with previous UN resolutions supporting a two-state solution. He further asserted that reforming the UNSC is critical for a more peaceful and sustainable future, advocating for the inclusion of permanent seats for the African Union (AU) and the Arab League. He called on both the African Union and the Arab League to collaborate and address the UN Security Council Reform Agenda seriously.
Njie also emphasized the importance of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in fostering peace and combating inequality. He pointed out that even smaller nations like The Gambia can leverage these tools for sustainable development, urging all parliaments represented to ensure STI serves as a “force for good” in building a more peaceful and prosperous future for all.
