The Gambia has initiated deportation proceedings for 33 undocumented immigrants who have been living in the country illegally, in violation of the nation’s laws. This action follows the launch of a new operation by the Immigration Department, known as “Immigration Enforcement,” aimed at curbing irregular migration activities and addressing the issue of undocumented residents.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Tanji Immigration base, Sulayman Kujabi, the Commissioner of Operations for the Gambia Immigration Department, disclosed that 38 undocumented immigrants, including individuals from Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, and Benin, have already been prosecuted before the Brikama Magistrate Court. Of these, 33 have been convicted, while the remaining five cases are pending. Commissioner Kujabi emphasized that these individuals have been residing in the country without proper documentation.
Furthermore, out of 381 individuals initially apprehended during the operation, 303 were able to regularize their stay. The apprehended individuals included Ghanaians, Guinean Bissau Nationals, Guineans, Senegalese, Mauritians, Malians, Nigerians, Beninese, Sierra Leoneans, Ivorians, Liberians, and a Nigerien.
