The Gambia’s Ministry of Health observed World Hepatitis Day on July 29, 2024, with a call to eliminate the virus by 2030. Research indicates that many people infected with the virus are not receiving treatment, mainly due to a lack of awareness and access to hepatitis treatment services.
The commemoration took the form of a march from Jimpex to Kanifing General Hospital. Dr. Sheikh Omar Bittaye of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital Hepatitis Clinic, speaking at the event, underscored the fact that many individuals are unknowingly infected with the virus. He stressed the crucial role of testing in preventing late realization and urged people to take responsibility for their health by coming forward for testing to help eliminate the virus in the country.
Representing the minister of health, Musa Camara, also the director of health for Western One region, stated that the government, through the ministry of health, is dedicated to eliminating viral hepatitis in the country. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can result in various health issues and can be fatal, with over 500 million cases reported worldwide.
