Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the deaths of three young Gambians who are believed to have passed away after consuming a dangerous substance known as Kush in Banjul, Barra, and Palma Rima. The Gambia has been facing a concerning rise in the availability of this hazardous drug, suspected to be trafficked from Sierra Leone, where it has caused significant harm. One of the victims has been identified as 26-year-old Aja Majula Hydara from Latrikunda, Germany, following an incident at Dune Night Club in Palma Rima on Friday, June 21, 2024.
Initial findings suggest that Hydara suffered severe reactions after ingesting a suspected drug and was swiftly taken to Kanifing General Hospital, where she tragically passed away. The authorities have detained Titi Camara, a 23-year-old from Latrikunda, Germany, who is currently in custody cooperating with the investigation.
Similarly, the Banjul Police Department is looking into the unexpected passing of 20-year-old Alhagie Darboe from Banjul. It is reported that Darboe consumed an alleged drug at a club, leading to his untimely demise at Ndemban Clinic. Officials are actively pursuing the arrest of an individual named Balanding, who is implicated in selling the drug to Darboe, the police stated.
In a related incident, authorities in Barra are currently investigating the passing of 26-year-old Bubacarr Sarr from Barra. It is reported that he ingested Kush, which led to self-harm and ultimately resulted in his passing at Essau District Hospital on the same day. “In light of these tragic events, the Office of the Inspector General of Police and the entire police leadership sincerely seek the support of the public, especially from parents and youth organizations, in the battle against drug abuse and trafficking. Enhanced cooperation and coordination between the police and the public are crucial in restoring the safety and security that we all desire, stated the police.
