A delegation of Gambian lawmakers and civil society representatives has recently returned from a rewarding five-day study visit to Kenya, where they gained valuable insights into reforms related to gender equality and legislative practices.

This visit was organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and funded by the European Union (EU) as part of efforts to enhance democratic governance in The Gambia under the EU-CODE project. The delegation was led by Hon. Fatoumata Njai, Chair of the National Assembly’s Gender Committee, and comprised ten committee members and three support staff. Additionally, four lawmakers received support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The Civil Society Organizations (CSO) Gender Platform delegation, headed by Ms. Mam Ndegen Jobe, included seven representatives from organizations such as TANGO and NGBV.

The primary focus of the visit was to study Kenya’s legal frameworks for gender representation, assess the influence of women legislators on policymaking, and explore best practices for addressing gender disparities. The delegates engaged with various Kenyan stakeholders, including legislators, advocacy groups, and community organizations, to discuss strategies for promoting gender equality. EU representatives highlighted the importance of the visit, stating, “this study visit underscores the EU’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive governance in The Gambia. Learning from Kenya’s experiences equips delegates with the tools necessary to drive meaningful reforms and strengthen democracy at home.”

Jainaba Faye, Head of International IDEA in The Gambia, characterized the visit as transformative. She remarked, “The delegation gained invaluable insights into Kenya’s affirmative action policies, which have greatly enhanced women’s representation in parliament. They also broadened their understanding of gender-based violence, reproductive rights, and community advocacy.” Faye expressed confidence that these insights would empower lawmakers and civil society leaders to draft effective legislation that promotes gender equality and safeguards vulnerable groups in The Gambia.

This visit represents a significant milestone in the EU-CODE project’s mission to promote gender-inclusive governance. Delegates are anticipated to apply their newfound knowledge to tackle gender disparities and encourage better representation in decision-making processes throughout The Gambia.
