The Gambia Ferry Service (GFS) will introduce new charges for most security personnel starting next month, requiring them to pay ferry crossing fees. The only exception will be for members of the Gambia National Army who are either in uniform or possess official identification.
The GFS rationale for this change was rising operational costs, including customs duties and maintenance. This decision has faced public criticism due to the traditional privileges enjoyed by security forces.
Critics have raised concerns about the potential impact on morale and questioned the timing of the decision. In response, the GFS has defended its choice as necessary for ensuring the sustainability of the service and has expressed intentions to engage with the public and stakeholders for a smooth transition.
