A group of landowners in Batokunku, The Gambia represented by Ya Mamie Ceesay are demanding the return of their lands, proper compensation, and permission to rebuild their homes.
According to claims, the land in Batokunku was originally owned by its inhabitants. However, it was unlawfully seized by former President Yahya Jammeh. Despite the pleas of the rightful owners, the authorities have yet to address their concerns. Gambians, both domestically and internationally to the said lands, have lawfully obtained land in Batokunku, received approval from Physical Planning, and have dutifully paid all requisite taxes.
The landowners have levied allegations against former President Jammeh, accusing him of abusing his power and demolishing their homes, causing significant disruption to their daily lives. The government must engage in constructive dialogue with the affected individuals as claimed the group to evaluate their losses and provide them with appropriate compensation. The Janneh Commission has also advised the government to review the Batokunku case for resolution. Furthermore, it has come to light that Minister Manlafi Jarju granted land leases to Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, constituting an unlawful acquisition of public land.
