The Speaker of The National Assembly, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, urgently called upon African lawmakers to leverage their constitutional authority to enact laws safeguarding African family values and national sovereignty.

Jatta, the speaker at the 2nd African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family Values and Sovereignty in Kampala, Uganda, highlighted the adverse effects of politics, tribalism, and religion. These factors have been used to create division and violence, especially in Africa. Jatta urged parliamentarians to act by implementing effective legislation, oversight mechanisms, and strong institutions to combat these threats and protect African sovereignty, family, and values.

During his speech, Jatta emphasized the significant danger illicit financial flows pose to African sovereignty. These outflows redirect immense wealth away from African economies, depriving governments of essential development and service delivery resources. He stressed that regardless of corruption, tax evasion, or money laundering, these illicit activities undermine the fiscal integrity of our nations and perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality.

During the conference, Jatta stressed the importance of defending national sovereignty by protecting the rights and interests of all citizens. Upholding democratic principles, ensuring transparency and accountability, and fostering an inclusive political culture are essential. Jatta believes empowering citizens and building responsive institutions can strengthen Africa’s

sovereignty and pave the way for a more prosperous and equitable future. He urged conference participants to seize this opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to African sovereignty, family values, and a brighter future, highlighting the critical leadership role of parliamentarians in inspiring their constituents and forging partnerships that transcend borders and generations.
