Former Gambian international goalkeeper Wandeh Njie passed away in the UK, and his funeral in Bakau drew widespread tributes for his football legacy and generosity, with criticism directed at the government for not holding a state funeral.

Former Gambian international goalkeeper Wandeh Njie passed away in the UK after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a wife and four children.

His funeral in Bakau attracted many mourners, including Willy Abraham, the president of Real de Banjul, and former Minister of Justice Ba Tambedou, both of whom lauded Njie’s contributions to football and highlighted his generosity. Njie’s sister, Anty Ndeye Njie, and childhood friend, Waka Jaigne, expressed their profound sorrow at his passing.

Some attendees voiced their disappointment with the government for not organizing a state funeral and noted the Minister of Youths and Sports’s absence.
