Police have detained dozens of people found doing business under the Brusubi turntable flyover at the community’s police station as they await charges. The arrested people included petty traders and green tea brewers who were caught up in the frantic situation as the police cordoned off the place to ensure no one escaped.
Police had warned against doing business or loitering around the vicinity as they intensified demolition operations.
However, the demolition has attracted mixed reactions among Gambians, as some welcomed it while others, mainly the victims of the operation, condemned the act and blamed the government for encouraging poverty in the country.
Police acting spokesman ASP Momodou Musa Sisawo urged the public to cooperate with the demolition team, adding that the operation is for the public good. Adding, “Our difficulties are traversing our public roads and going on our businesses, and this operation is to help bring safety to our streets. It’s hard, but the process continues, to make good of our society, he said.
