A Gambian man residing in Germany has encountered serious legal issues following his arrival at Banjul International Airport, where he was apprehended for possessing suspected illegal drugs.
Alieu Njie, 41, was detained shortly after disembarking from SN Brussels flight 233 from Brussels. During a security search conducted by officials at The Gambia’s sole international airport, a substantial quantity of illicit drugs was found in his possession.
According to the Gambia Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG), Njie was arrested on December 17, 2024, with ten packs of ecstasy tablets totaling forty-seven thousand and seventy-eight (47,078) tablets.
The agency stated, “The Gambian national residing in Germany was apprehended upon arrival at Banjul International Airport. He is currently in custody as further investigations are underway.”
This incident underscores the persistent challenge of drug trafficking in The Gambia, which has increasingly become a matter of concern in recent years despite strict penalties for drug-related offenses.
In response, authorities have intensified their efforts to combat the smuggling and distribution of illegal substances, particularly at significant entry points such as airports and seaports. Njie’s case remains under scrutiny, and officials have not disclosed whether he acted independently or as part of a broader trafficking network.
The Gambian authorities have reaffirmed their dedication to tackling drug trafficking and have urged the public to report any suspicious activities.
